Polish Translation of a collection of essays on literary theory
New in print and digital formats! The book? Poetics and Hermeneutics: Essays in the Philosophy of Literature ?is a collection of mostly early texts by the American pragmatist Richard Shusterman, previously unpublished in Polish—with the exception of two articles that appeared in "Przestrzenie Teorii" as a preview of the collection. It fills a significant gap in the Polish reception of Shusterman's philosophy, known primarily for his innovative work in pragmatist aesthetics and as the founder of somaesthetics. In the texts collected in Poetics and Hermeneutics, Shusterman considers the ontology of literary works, critical reasoning within aesthetic inquiry, the interpretation of works of art, and the nature and possibility of understanding, entering into a lively dialogue with the concepts of philosophers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein, Roman Ingarden, Jacques Derrida, Hans Georg Gadamer, and Benedetto Croce. This collection of topics is complemented by essays on philosophy as a form of writing and autobiographical sources for the author's characteristic philosophical approach. Consolidated as a philosophical discipline for over twenty years, Somaesthetics develops through the ameliorative principle of experience. In the context of redefining aesthetics in perceptive and proprioceptive terms, Richard Shusterman reworked pragmatist aesthetics in the 1990s through the soma, understood as a living body, which simultaneously perceives and creates. Going beyond an idea of ??aesthetics centered on appreciation, Shusterman focused above all on the applicative and practical aspect that puts artist and user on the same level. The dialogue with disciplines that lend themselves to applied feedback, such as those of architecture and urban planning, is thus encouraged. Taking into consideration the design, experiential and social aspects, Shusterman interprets architecture through the active participation of the soma and, consequently, the relationships the social, cultural and performative with the city.

Richard Shusterman's thought today represents an important reference point within the philosophical debate, in general, and aesthetics, in particular. Starting from a philosophical-analytical background but opening early on to the stimuli offered by pragmatism and maintaining a dialogue with "continental" authors and traditions of thought as well, Shusterman has offered original and stimulating contributions on a wide variety of contemporary aesthetic practices, focusing on the reevaluation of aesthetic experience as a whole and, above all, on the recovery of the dimension of corporeality and pleasure. This has also proved to be extremely useful and fruitful from a philosophical point of view in order to liberate aesthetic inquiry from any schematic, merely dichotomous and abstract subdivision of the arts into "low" and "high," "popular" and "serious," and in order to elevate the bodily dimension as a whole, in its unique capacity to unite nature and culture. Of this and much more Shusterman's essays selected for this collection of his writings in Italian offer exemplary testimony.
