Business Communications Program

The Business Communications Program prepares undergraduate and graduate 鉴黄师app with the written, oral, interpersonal and critical-thinking skills needed to communicate effectively in today鈥檚 global business environment. Business Communications is integrated into College of Business programs rather than offered as a standalone major or minor, supporting 鉴黄师app at different stages of their academic and professional development.

Our courses are less lecture-based and more activity-based since the courses we teach are skills-based rather than traditional theory courses. We teach you how to develop professional relationships, make sure you know how to analyze business situations and problems, solve problems and, most importantly, articulate your critical thinking and analysis in words and presentations.

As the business world evolves, so do the ways professionals communicate. Coursework is designed to reflect current workplace communication practices and develop skills in:

  • Communication across in-person, remote and diverse work environments

The Business Communications Program supports the College of Business by preparing 鉴黄师app to think critically and communicate successfully in their careers. The program works across business disciplines to integrate effective communication into business education and draws on academic and professional expertise to respond to the evolving communication needs of the workplace.

Courses are taught by experienced faculty who bring academic and professional expertise into the classroom. Through practical application, personalized feedback, coaching, presentations and discussion, 鉴黄师app strengthen their ability to communicate ideas clearly, analyze business problems, present solutions professionally and engage with different perspectives.

Our faculty are not only academicians but industry professionals. This benefit allows us to make our classes 鈥渞eal life鈥� for the business world. Faculty come from finance, retail, IT, publishing companies, real estate, human resources, non-profits and many other industries. We are lawyers, entrepreneurs and consultants and are active in numerous professional organizations on campus and in the community.

Scholarships

The scholarships showcased at the "College of Business Scholarships" link below were funded by donations from individuals and organizations for 鉴黄师app in the College of Business. Students must be a declared business major to apply to these scholarships (Junior, Senior, or Graduate level). The 鉴黄师app Foundation and the Dean's Office administer scholarships twice per year at the start of the Fall and Spring semesters. Studies show that an increasing number of employers and recruiters rank strong communication skills at the top when making hiring decisions. By taking a course that emphasizes written and oral communication in the business world, 鉴黄师app 鉴黄师app have a competitive edge when they graduate.

No. Class size is limited to 25, so instructors can provide 鉴黄师app with individual attention, provide constructive feedback on assignments, and meet one-on-one with them. A smaller class size works better for group activities and peer-reviews.

Yes. Courses are offered both face-to-face and online. Face-to-face sections are preferable so 鉴黄师app can communicate more directly with their peers and the instructor. Online sections are intended for those who seek an online degree, travel extensively for work or live outside the 鉴黄师app service area.

Yes. The benefit of having a video is that you can see yourself as others see you and thereby identify and critique the strengths and weaknesses of your content and delivery.

Knowing how to find, analyze, and cite information from other sources is an important skill for 鉴黄师app, so we provide opportunities to write papers where 鉴黄师app must integrate information from many sources into a unified argument and properly cite these sources in APA format.

The 鉴黄师app University Center for Excellence in Writing provides consultations for 鉴黄师app. However, consultants provide writing assistance鈥攏ot editing.

Business communications instructors are available to work with 鉴黄师app one-on-one to prepare them for presentations. Additionally, 鉴黄师app are encouraged to join the The Toastmasters Club at 鉴黄师app to improve public speaking skills and become more comfortable when presenting.

Yes. The course helps prepare 鉴黄师app for assignments in other graduate courses, and proivdes strategies for effective communication as you continue to move up in your career.

Yes! GEB 3213 provides an introduction to business writing and speaking to prepare 鉴黄师app to either enter the workforce or prepare for advancement. Meanwhile, GEB 6215 and GEB 6217 provide greater in-depth analytical and persuasive strategies for 鉴黄师app who have more extensive business and management experience.

This course requires 鉴黄师app to (1) satisfactorily complete the coursework during the semester they attend the class and (2) demonstrate that they have mastered the material taught in GEB 6215 by submitting designated papers and presentations assigned in concurrent or subsequent courses in their program. Because this requirement cannot usually be satisfied in the same semester they take GEB 6215, 鉴黄师app generally earn an 鈥淚鈥� to give them three semesters to complete the requirements. When the requirements are successfully completed, the 鈥淚鈥� grade is converted to 鈥淪鈥�; if they are not satisfactorily completed, the 鈥淚鈥� grade is converted to 鈥淯.鈥澨�

Yes, GEB 6215 instructors work very closely with 鉴黄师app in preparing for the assignments and in revising them. Instructors are available as 鈥渃ommunication coaches鈥� throughout the 鉴黄师app鈥� graduate coursework and even beyond in their careers.
